Planning to start a theatre company is a delicate balancing act of keeping multiple details running in multiple directions. It’s not just organization, either. There’s an awful lot of bold and sudden moves that are required in order to build a reputation, and also to show stamina and perseverance to the community. It helps to have some of the more essential details arranged far in advance however, and although there are variables that are different for every production and company, some things are fairly uniform.
More often than not, these are connected to the elements of stage design . For lighting, there aren’t a wild variety of options once one makes the cross over into high-voltage systems. The instruments available are all fairly standard, as are the gels necessary for color and texture. Make-up, likewise, is an area where the materials are ones that have been in use for a few generations, and one or two companies seem to have the market cornered, offering the products that have the best effects.
In terms of theatre costumes , however, there is some leeway, and at the beginning, purchasing or renting is an excellent option. It’s a very time consuming process to make costumes by hand, and it’s possible to find whole productions already pre-made. This insures excellent quality, and also makes for one less thing to worry about down the road.
