Dancing and Driving Modern

The movements and changes in modern dance from the 20th to the 21st centuries have remarkable similarities to the changes in technologies in this relatively short period.  When Martha Graham and Katherine Dunham were setting the groundwork for a very new form, it was at a time when the technological age was just starting to make its first steps.  It’s an amazing evolution, then, from a time when Ford was just beginning to enter into the landscape in the United States, to the present, when a ford online repair manual is common to how people live their lives.  At the same time, the unique and distinctive vocabulary of modern dance has entered into the everyday realms, where most people with an eye for art and culture have had some exposure to the form.

It began as a response to the constrictive nature of ballet.  Visionary artists like Isadora Duncan were at the front lines in contemporary dance.  She argued for an alternative to the extreme discipline of ballet, one based on the dancer’s natural form, where she could move according to her own constraints.  This is not to say that modern dance is not without its own extreme discipline, but it does so in a way that makes natural movement more precise, rather than forcing contortion for the sake of classical tastes.

Today’s modern dance has developed into its own codified rules and regimens, however.  New generations of artists are working toward creating new forms, and new evolutions, that continue where modern dance left off.  For a newly mechanized world, natural movement was welcome as an antidote to the constraints of an industrial society.  But for a contemporary world, where information technologies are a driving force, choreographers and dance companies are blending natural movement with digital effects.

Just as the idea of auto mechanics used to be contained in the minds of experts but can now be accessed through sites such as haynes.com, physical dance theatre combines information technologies with the visceral power of the body.  Companies like DV8 are able to break genuinely new ground by combining movement with technology, and moving both forward in unique and engaging ways.  The roots in modern dance are there, certainly, but in much the same way that modern dance, at one time, took a revered form, and made it into something entirely new.  This is a general pattern in artistic vanguards of all disciplines, where the old ways are not forgotten at all, but integrated into a present to make art that looks forward into the future.

Dance in Ottawa 2012

For those who live in the world of performing arts, be it in the theatre or in music or in dance, options to perform may not present themselves right away. Many companies must look to rent commercial property space, which is a wonderful option provided the space can accommodate performance needs, and also provided that the company can afford to pay the rental fees. In Ottawa, Ontario, Canada there exists and organization that offers companies a place to perform and that is the National Arts Centre. It is located in downtown with
Ottawa apartments , restaurants and hotels surrounding the neighborhood which makes this a wonderful place to go see live performances for those living in the city as well as those in town for a visit.

This is one of the largest facilities of its kind not only in the country, but in the world, and they offer space to acclaimed performing companies as well as those artists who are up and coming. And for up and coming artists the chance to perform in such a grand facility is quite likely the beginning of their budding careers . Along with a heavy performance schedule the facility also provides opportunities for adults and for children, in the form of seminars and classes in the art of their desire. They are multi-lingual and multidisciplinary, and serve a wide range of audiences and performers alike.

The performances for dance very from traditional ballet, to family focused companies, to contemporary dance…and quite frankly everything in between. And there are four different stages to accommodate these performances. The largest of the four is Southam Hall. This is the home stage for the resident companies, the Opera Lyra Ottawa, the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra and the National Arts Centre Orchestra . The second largest stage is simply called The Theatre. This is where many of the dance performances take place. The two smaller stages are The Studio and The Fourth Stage. The Studio houses the smaller theatrical productions and the The Fourth stage is used for many of the activities opened to the community.

The dance performance schedule for 2012 is quite eclectic. The Akram Khan company performs next week, for three scheduled performances on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th of February. This company is led by Akram Khan, a dancer and choreography from Great Britain. This company has vividly, strikingly visual shows as well as bold and wild musical accompaniment and audiences who have seen them perform are holding their breath until the shows next weekend. The website for the National Arts Centre offers a current and complete schedule for all the shows running throughout 2012, along with a brief summation of the companies and of their performances. It is a wonderful place to see a variety of dance in the artistic town of Ottawa.

Dance and Balance

The motion of any dance begins with a sense of balance.  The dancer is either moving in accord with the principles of balance or against them, and all throughout is combining different levels of effort and opposition in order to create a work of art out of a moment.  As Camilla Jessel well understood, balance is the key to a graceful movement.  It is also the key to a graceful life.

It does not make sense, then, to give up on perfecting balance, even as one is moving into old age.  In fact, it makes more sense to continue to perfect the art of balance.  When we are born, we crawl and we fall until we become used to the rhythms of the earth, and the rhythms of our bodies, and learn how they can work together.  For the rest of the life spent in a body, the balance that comes naturally so early on is something that we continually contend with.  It is based on that central circumstance of the gravitational pull, and occasionally the best dancers can learn how to temporarily break free from that pull, and it looks and feels very much like flight.

In the meantime, there are practical concerns.  The body’s center of balance is always shifting.  This is something that we know instinctually from a very young age.  Perhaps this is because we are more capable of bouncing back, and the bones are more resilient.  For the elderly, balance often becomes something that is no longer a second nature, but something else entirely.  Interestingly enough, dancing is one way of helping us to maintain balance when we are old.  The notion that this is entering into popular consciousness is not at all unwelcome.  Dancers do what everyone else does, but a bit more gracefully perhaps, and grace is something that will serve everyone well as they get older.

For dancers, this is naturally a pleasing idea.  There is a kind of unspoken anxiety that this notion of balance will become difficult to contend with when aging.  There are many methods of learning new tricks of balance, like riding a motorcycle or walking a tightrope, but the prospect of shopping for motorcycle tires is not as appealing as the thought of continuing to dance.  Every age has its challenges, and if old age holds the challenge of balance, then the dancer is already well ahead in the game.

Hot Rods and Lindies

Anyone who has ever fallen in love with hot rods, in any way, shape, or form, has been made aware that there is certainly a distinctive dance culture related to the lifestyle.  While some of its more mainstream cultural aspects can get overlooked in the process of finding the right falken for the ride, they are the things that draw people in to begin with.  The lifestyle is related to a kind of clothing, a kind of behavior, and a kind of dance.  Some of these will no doubt evoke a deep feeling of nostalgia.

It is a sense of nostalgia that serves as one of the main thrusts of hot rod life, whether it’s in the backdrop or the foreground.  For those who are looking to make their obsessions a little more spicy, looking into small details can reveal interesting new worlds.  Hot rods and dance parties have been connected from the early days.  It’s perfectly reasonable, since the cultural scene did grow in the midst of the early days of rock n’ roll.  Although the bands never lacked for subject matter, hot rods worked their way in again and again, suggesting that both the modified cars and the African-descended music had some elemental common ground, or heartbeats that were very similar at the very least.

Looking deeper into the sources of anything can become a task in itself, and there is absolutely a deep and notable history in the origins of the dances related to hot rod culture.  For most people interested in dance however, and perhaps fortunately, the actions speak louder than any words.  One can go off in many directions looking at the dance forms around hot rod culture at its peak.  West Coast swing had origins in Lindy Hop from the 20s in Harlem, and found variations that developed into its own thing with the help of the Jitterbug.  But it would be twice as fulfilling to take a class in West Coast Swing at the local club, and the learning would be in the legs.

There is a deep connection between the dances and the central objects of desire.  Knowing the history of the vintage wheel works on one’s own car can lead to interesting discoveries about the nature of mechanics, and car culture in the world.  But it’s a lot more fun to get behind the wheel, and learn what torque is all about.  This is where the dance and the dancer really become one.

Dreams, Reality and Dance Lessons

There are a few careers that are standard dreams for children and youths. Some people even carry these iconic ambitions into adulthood and actually pursue them on a professional level. We typically refer to these individuals as delusional. After all, there’s only one President of the United States at any given time, and how many musicians actually become rock stars, or how many actors actually become movie stars? Unfortunately, the percentages are extremely small. The number of talented athletes who ever make it into professional sports is another excellent example. And while that’s somewhat disappointing to all the young hopefuls, it’s also part of the reason, or at least reflective of the reason that these careers are such common youthful ambitions and childhood dreams. Meanwhile, there are numerous other exciting and ambitious possibilities that also entice children’s fantasies and many of these frequently lead to actual professional careers. Money Mutual commercials demonstrate how accessible emergency finances can be, and many times these have been applied to guitar, dance lesson and football uniform purchases. Where there is a dream, there is a short term loan provider.

Becoming a dancer is one of these common dreams. It is also one that has a much different reality orientation that what is drummed up in the heads of so many five-year-olds awkwardly shuffling off in their first tap shoes or proudly making their way on point in their ruffled tutus. Of course those young dreams center on the performance itself, onstage and in front of millions of adoring fans. They also save mental space for the dozens of roses constantly being thrust into their arms and the magnificent celebrity status they see projected before them. These are such stuff as dreams are made of. Torn ligaments, shoulder injuries, blisters and poverty are the stuff of reality. The best anyone can really hope for is to find a life somewhere in-between. And of course for others, finding a life, any life, that is, any life outside of dance is the best option. So, what do you do if you spend your childhood and early youth in dance classes and recital performances? You reach a point where you have to decide on a lonely life of instability and regular injury or whether a place in an annual production of the Nutcracker, with the local community group, will fulfill your passions. And if you decide on the poor lonely and painful route, you’ll need lots of commitment, sacrifice and hard work. And a little financial advice from Montel Williams might benefit you as well.

Controversial Dancing in Grease is Sign of the Times

Have you ever wondered what automobiles and dancing might have in common? Well, do the words greased lightening mean anything to you? If you were born anytime in the 1970s, okay, let’s put that back to anytime in the 1950s or later, you are more than likely already humming a popular tune that carried a generation and gave a previous one a wider social awareness and audience. And we all know that while the musical was definitely a love story, it can be argued whether the love was actually more for another person or with the vintage tires . For now we’re going to go give it to the romantics and definitely concede the major love story was between the boys and the girls. And the iconic images of John Travolta and Olivia Newton John dancing and singing through the fun house will most likely be first in most people’s minds when reminded of this musical.

Interestingly, the film version of Grease, which was based on the 1971 theatrical musical, written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, was also considered to be pretty controversial and unsuitable for young teenage audiences. It’s difficult to imagine a time when the dances and subject matter contained in the theatrical production, and primarily the film, would be considered too risque and inappropriate for much of the mainstream audience. Parents were selective about their children’s age and maturity levels in watching the movie, while there were others who concluded that these concerns brought society back to the moral level of the 1950s, which is when the movie is set.

In addition to the provocative dancing and some subject matters brought up in the script, the cars themselves, which after all were the subject of the show’s title, carried along with their passengers a certain amount of controversy. The race took place at the LA River and while the impressive custom steering wheels , stripes and motors were a big hit with young audiences, concerned parents wanted to put the breaks on these scenes as well. Many concerned citizens argued that the race scene encouraged dangerous and destructive behaviors in the youth as well as promoted bad driving habits. This is similar to some of the complaints about another iconic car race in film, though this one took place about twenty years earlier and featured James Dean in his legend making role Jim Stark in Rebel Without a Cause . The film, and stage production, continue to be a popular aspect of mainstream culture, and it can be interesting to consider the more controversial elements in relation to the changing nature of morals and social norms that occurred between the setting of the script and the time period in which the film and theatre production were first developed. A critical evaluation of the artistic merit involved with the dancing is another subject altogether.

Your Driving Style Affects Your Tires

Almost everyone remembers those cautionary films shown in drivers ed or traffic school that predict a gruesome end to anyone who fails to develop defensive driving habits. The evils of speeding and aggressive driving are equated with car accidents and fatalities. They can also result in tickets, suspended licenses and higher insurance rates. If you’re still not convinced of the perils of driving this way maybe you should consider how your driving style affects the tires on your car.

If you spend weeks hunting around for the best deal on tires and wheels for your car, you probably want to get your money’s worth. You don’t want them to wear out prematurely or worse, get punctures or even blowout. Aggressive driving tactics wear out the tread faster than more cautious driving. That means that the tires have to be replaced sooner and that the thinner tread is more susceptible to damage and less responsive on the road, which can lead to serious accidents.

The reason this happens is that aggressive driving, namely speeding and quick stops and starts, removes layers of the tire’s tread. The phrase burning rubber isn’t a misnomer. Since the tread is the tire, burning off layers of the tread means that the tire wears out faster. So, if you don’t want to be shopping for tires for sale anytime soon, you should seriously consider how you drive.

Teaching with Maps

Good teachers can take the resources they are given and turn them into valuable teaching experiences for their students. They use their imagination to stretch out educational materials and create new ones.

For example, an outdated wall maps can become lessons in history. Because political boundaries in the world change so frequently, a map from ten or twenty years ago is a relic of an bygone era. It can be used to show the evolution of certain regions and spark discussions about diplomatic and military strategies and their impact on countries and governments.

The advent of digital technology makes it possible for teachers to make new and interactive maps while expending few financial resources. By using computer mapping software it is possible for teachers to create a radius map , or show students how to do so. These maps can be centered on any given locus — a city, a town, a mountain, a lake — and include the surrounding territory for hundreds or thousands of miles. Because they do not have to be printed by a publishing company, these maps are virtually free. They are also interactive, which means that they can be expanded or adjusted to focus on larger or smaller regions or they can change the center point. This will offer countless learning opportunities for students in the subjects of geography, government as well as numerous social studies subjects.

Benefits of Customized Travel Insurance

You may wonder why there are so many visitor insurance policies available, like the policies offered by TATA AIG travel insurance . If you are looking for a generic one size fits all travel policy then you’re going to be looking for a long time. The best policies are tailored to fit the needs of the insured party, which means there isn’t a general purpose option.

This is to your benefit. If you are traveling for a work project and planning to spend every waking moment in an office, you are not going to be exposed to the same level of risk as someone doing a tour of all the extreme sports locations in the same country. You want to know that you are covered in case you get sick or injured, but since your risk factors are low, you don’t want to have to pay as much as those on riskier trips.

Your age will also play a factor in your insurance. Younger people tend to be healthier and need less coverage, so student polices may be less expensive. However, if you’re studying abroad for a year or longer, you want to make sure your policy includes preventative check ups. Senior citizens will want to have policies that cover their preexisting conditions and make it easy for them to get prescriptions replaced.

There are actually many different ways that travel insurance can be customized. You need to visit a good insurance site or talk directly with an agent who specializes in international travel insurance in order to make sure you are getting the plan that best suits your specific needs.
